SCORES AND PERFORMANCES

Melchert explained, “The rules for this work start with a square tile with a grid of circles drawn on each before breaking it. I assembled the shards, drew stripes on each, then glazed them. The density of the image appealed to me, but I thought that a viewer might appreciate having a clue as to how it was made. On the next tile, I left a small patch unglazed and unfired. The contrast between the two areas suggested the difference between a musical score and what you hear when the score is played,”
