OLIVER RANCH POOL
Steve Oliver recalled, “Jim Melchert was here in 1989, when the house was being finished. I had seen a gallery show of his work. I saw these wonderful tile projects and asked if he'd like to do something. We asked him to choose a site. We didn't even suggest the tile in the pool. He selected the site. It made such perfect sense. He brought the whole family together. He asked every member of the family to make half a dozen tiles, and he'd pick one. Each of us has one tile. I think the children still know which are theirs. I don't. All four sides of the pool are different. In the daylight the reflection makes the row of Jim's tiles above the waterline look the same as the row below. At night you can see that they are totally different. For the installation, Jim brought the tiles and arranged the layout, and our people installed them. He supervised. Inside the house is a shower that people use before they go into the pool or after, and Jim also made tiles there. They are similar to the tiles outside. A few years later, after our first two grandchildren were born, Jim did another layer in the shower that is at a child's height.”
