MIRROR BOXES

Jim Melchert’s original “Mirror Box” was initially made for an exhibition in 1970 at the Richmond Art Center. The interior walls of a small wooden box were lined with a mirror, and the bottom of the box contained a glazed handmade ceramic tile. When viewing the interior, one saw a colorful illusion of infinite space. In 2019, Melchert asked woodworking craftsman Bob Schmitz to build new wood boxes reviving the project he’d started many years before.
