GAMES
The concept of the “Game” is one that Jim Melchert returned to frequently throughout his career. In the 1960s Melchert began a series of works that explicitly took the form of gameboards. Game On Black Field in 1968 invited the viewer to see connections between the pieces that shed light on the situation. He explained, “The mere juxtaposition of two objects affected how they could be read. With later games, especially those in transparent tiers, I wanted the objects to be read as evidence.”
